How to Choose the Perfect Dog Bed for Your Pet

How to Choose the Perfect Dog Bed for Your Pet

We spend countless hours shopping for a bed for ourselves, not to mention thousands of dollars. This is because sleeping comfort is important. We want the place where we rest our head to be a sanctuary.

The same is true for your beloved dog. A good dog bed can last years, be the perfect resting place for your dog, and it can also help with training. (But a dog bed doesn’t, it shouldn’t, cost a fortune!) Finding the right dog bed for your dog can solve a number of problems. It can help your dog feel secure and safe. It can give you a special location to send your dog when you need them to stay.

For example, during mealtime, bedtime or when you have company you can send your dog to their bed and if you’ve chosen your dog’s bed wisely, they’ll happily go. It makes sense then that not just any and all dog beds will do. You need to choose a bed that’s perfect for your dog and their unique needs and personality. There are many very important considerations to make. Let’s take a look at them individually.

Size Matters

Sure, a Chihuahua would love to rest their little head in a giant dog bed because they tend to behave as if they’re large dogs. However, a Great Dane isn’t going to enjoy spending time in a dog bed built for a Chihuahua. Size is important. You want your dog to feel safe, secure, and comfortable in their dog bed. Find a bed that fits your dog and the space in your home comfortably.

Material Girl, or Guy

There are many different materials a bed can be made out of. And just as many that it can be filed with.

For example, a bed can be made of polyester and stuffed with fiberfill much like a pillow on your own bed. A bed can also be made from micro-suede or vinyl and filled with memory foam. The material the bed is made from can be critically important. Dogs can have allergies or skin sensitivities to some materials and fillings. Additionally, the purpose for your dog’s bed and their health need to be considered when choosing dog bed materials. For example, if you’re using the bed outdoors you’ll want a waterproof dog bed.

If you have a dog with bladder control issues then waterproof or washable materials are important too. And if you have a pet that is older or you just love to pamper them then the memory foam is great on their joints, tendons and muscles.

Health & Age

Your dog’s health and age are also important considerations when choosing a bed. For example, if you have an older dog, you want the bed to be easy for them to get into and out of. An elevated bed, like a pet couch, may be ideal for larger animals so they don’t have to stoop down to get into their bed. Likewise a smaller bed with low sides would be ideal for an aging toy breed. This eliminates them having to step over any tall sides. And as mentioned before if your pet has bladder control issues you will want to make sure the bed is easily washed to resume its form or that it’s waterproof.

Location, Location, Location

Beds come in almost every shape, style and color. This is important because it means you can find the perfect bed for your home. For example, what if you have an empty corner in your living room that’s perfect for your dog’s bed? Then why not get them a bed that’s designed to fit into a corner? And what about the dog bed that sits at the end of your bed? You can find great elevated dog beds or couches that perfectly match your needs. Circles, squares, rectangles, ovals, raised beds, couches, and the good old fashioned dog pillow are all options depending on where you’re placing your dog’s bed.

Purpose & Personality

Now you already know your dog has a unique personality and you can get a bed that matches their wonderful characteristics. For example, what if your dog enjoys snuggling or burrowing or if you have a dog that is particularly shy? You can get a dog bed with a cover on it for them.

And if your dog likes to feel like one of their humans then an elevated bed or dog couch might be perfect. And what if you have a dog that loves playing and hanging out outside? You can get a bed for them that weathers well, is durable, and matches your dog’s personality. Do you have a dog that you love to spoil? What about an extra cushy micro-suede couch? And of course you can match your dog’s bed to your own style and decorating personality too. From whimsical to contemporary and everything in between, there’s a dog bed to match your purpose and personality.

Let’s Not Forget Price

The first step to finding the perfect dog bed for your dog is to make a list of what your dog needs. Prioritize these needs with the most important need being first on your list. You can add a list of wants, like color and shape, under the list of needs so you can compare dog beds.

Once you have a list of the features and functions you’d like your dog bed to have, the final element to compare is price. Dog beds can cost a small fortune but they don’t have to. Comparison shop online and look for the shipping costs too. A retailer may drastically cut the price of the dog bed and make up for it in what they charge for shipping.

A dog bed should be something that lasts a good long time. They should be easy to keep clean, comfortable for your dog and they should fit your dog’s needs and personality. Create a list of what you and your dog want in a perfect dog bed and start comparing.

How to Choose a Pillow

How to Choose a Pillow

Necks are vulnerable.  Just carrying around the weight of your head all day creates pressure in the cervical vertebrae and connective tissues. Your head is about eight percent of your body’s mass. And if you work at a desk or use repetitive body motion during the day, your head and neck may not be held in an ideal position. The position of your neck during sleep should create as little strain as possible so those fatigued muscles can relax and recover.

The goal is to keep your body well aligned at night. When you are lying down, your spine should be straight with one vertebra aligned above the next. If you do yoga, you could consider this a horizontal version of the pose called “The Mountain.”

Adding a pillow to your sleeping pose means that good neck alignment is easier said than done. There are many variables involved; here we’ll explore them in more detail.

Height and weight of the individual

A 6’4” football player who weighs 260 pounds will need a more supportive pillow than a petite 5’ 2” woman who weighs 110 pounds. That’s because his larger, heavier musculature exerts more downward force than hers will.  Therefore, for him to stay aligned (all other factors being equal) he needs a firmer pillow, and she’ll need something softer.

Back, stomach or side sleeper?

When you sleep on your back, you can usually get by with a small pillow. If you’re on your stomach, you may need no pillow at all. A side sleeper needs a well-stuffed pillow for good neck support, because the pillow needs to fill in the entire space between your shoulder and the side of your head.

Mattress softness

This makes the biggest difference in choosing a pillow’s thickness or height. For instance, if you sleep on your side on a very firm mattress–hopefully an organic mattress –you’ll need a thick pillow. If you sleep on your back and love to sink into a soft mattress, you may need no pillow at all. If you sleep on your stomach, you probably will be better off with either no pillow or a fairly low one so your neck won’t be forced into an angle.

Pillow shape and material

Most molded or formed bed pillows come in two primary shapes: soap shaped (a simple rectangle, like a bar of soap) and contoured. A contour pillow has high curved edges to provide extra stability and support for the neck and a depression in the center to cradle the head. Molded or formed pillows have a solid form that does not shift. Many people find it more difficult to adjust to an unchanging shape.  Other pillows are filled with either fiber or batting. The fill or contents of many pillows can be shifted around to adjust to changes in your position during the night.

The right pillow is an often-overlooked but very important piece of a comfortable sleeping system. Choose your new pillows with care and use the old ones for a pillow fight!

How to Choose the Perfect Outdoor Bar Stools for Your Backyard or Patio

How to Choose the Perfect Outdoor Bar Stools for Your Backyard or Patio

Outdoor bar stools are very cool choices if you want to spice up your outside setting. They’re great for backyard household settings such as patios, gardens, beside the pool, in the yard or in a conservatory. They’re also very appealing in a commercial setting such as an outside dining patio, employee areas, or a poolside bars. If you like to entertain your friends and family by your pool or on your deck you’ll need some sort table to sit at. Why not make it a funky outdoor pub set with barstools. Your guests will love it. (If you don’t already have one)

Deciding on outdoor stools is a little bit different than choosing indoor bar stools. There are a number of different things that you have to consider because they’re going to be outdoors. The main one being weatherproofing. You have to put on a smaller design hat and pullout your bigger practicality hat. I’m not saying forget about design but you have to put it on the back burner and be practical about the weather.

The first thing you should do is find materials that repel moisture. If you buy some of the cheaper or lower end barstools they will quickly breakdown from the elements when they’re left out year round. Instead of replacing your cheaper stools all the time, spend a little more money and get good quality ones. It will save you money in the long run.

Metal outdoor bar stools are a great choice that will easily hold up to Mother Nature. They offer clean lines and a contemporary look that appeals to everyone. They will also take a lot of abuse and stand up in the long run. What metals should you get? Aluminum is very popular because it’s durable, lighter and easier to move around. They’re good for stacking and totally waterproof. Other good ones include stainless steel and wrought iron.

Wooden outdoor bar stools can also be very eye catching. They blend in nicely with nature and offer a softer warmer feel to the décor. You have to be careful what type of woods you choose so they stand the test of time. Wood outdoor barstools have to be pressure treated and have thick urethane coating on them for protection. They make a lot of different wood stools designed especially for outside.

You may be thinking that these materials that I just mentioned are going to be hard and uncomfortable to sit on. That may be true but it’s easily fixed with padded seat cushions. That’s the great thing about outdoor seating; you don’t have to give up comfort for durability. Simply get padded cushions that tie on to the stools and remove the cushions when you’re done so they don’t get damaged.

The thing to remember once you have your outdoor bar stools is upkeep. They will take abuse form rain, snow, chlorine, body oils, suntan lotions, extreme heat etc. Try your best to wipe them down and clean them as often as possible to prevent them from deteriorating to quick. Finally remember to think practicality over style so they last longer. All this should help you choose the perfect stools for your back yard or patio.

How to Choose a Bed Pillow

How to Choose a Bed Pillow

(*Please note that this article is only an opinion and not to be taken as medical advice or expert information.)

Everyone has a special way that we feel is the most comfortable way to sleep. Because of this, choosing a bed pillow is a unique experience for each of us. The first thing to do, before selecting a pillow to sleep on, is to determine your favorite sleeping position. Some of us like to sleep on our sides, some on our backs and some on our stomachs. There are different pillows suited for all of these positions.

In general, if you like to sleep on your stomach, a softer and flatter pillow is probably your best bet. A softer pillow helps relieve tension on your neck that a firmer pillow might increase. Sleeping on your stomach is naturally accompanied by a twisting of the neck. A firm pillow might also add strain on the neck by forcing your head up. So, for a stomach sleeper to have the most comfortable sleep, choose a soft, flat pillow, or a pillow that allows you to add or remove the fill to personalize your comfort. Good choices for the stomach sleeper might include a Dacron Polyester filled pillow, or the Eco-Basics Pillow.

For side sleepers, a thicker, firmer pillow would be the most likely candidate to enhance your evening slumber. Pillows such a contoured memory foam pillow or a latex foam pillow, are designed to provide the support between the bed and the head allowing a side sleeper to keep their neck and spine aligned. A softer pillow, for a side sleeper, would cause the head to slump and put strain on the neck.

Back Sleepers are unique in that a firm, but soft pillow feels the best. Back sleepers need cervical neck support, but also need less pressure on the back of the head. Contour shaped pillows are perfect for this. They are designed with a valley for the head and an arch for the neck. The nice thing about that shape is that if you end up rolling to your side, you’d still receive the same benefit as a side sleeper. That is, support for the neck with less pressure on the head. Contour pillows are usually made from a pressure relieving memory foam.

But, what if you are one of those people who think Memory Foam Pillows are a little too stiff, but you still want the benefits of less pressure on the head and good support for the neck? Well, one of the best alternatives is a Buckwheat Hull Pillow. Buckwheat pillows are filled with a whole lot of hard, little buckwheat husks. They are a little like flattened beans and they move and slide around as you adjust the pillow to your liking. What they do provide is a variable and adjustable shape that allows your head and neck to be most comfortable. Technically, a buckwheat pillow would benefit all three sleeping styles because of the adjustability factor. There is also a zippered opening that allows one to add or remove fill based on your size or personal comfort.

The bottom line is that choosing a sleeping pillow is a personal preference based on your own comfort position. Figure out how you feel most comfortable sleeping, and then choose a pillow that matches that style. Having the right pillow for you can give you the best benefit of all; a rejuvenating sleep that allows you to wake up refreshed and ready for the day. Sleep Well!
