What Is The Difference Between Down & Feather Pillows?

What Is The Difference Between Down & Feather Pillows?

Many consumers think down and feathers are the same thing and reference them as the same. In fact nothing could be more different as the cost, feature set, and firmness are all impacted by the fillings.

Down filling comes from the underbelly of ducks and geese and is very soft and airy. Down costs approximately five to ten times as much as feathers. Down filling is used for comfort and is used in down pillows, down comforters, down blankets and on the top of down top feather beds.

Feathers on the other hand come from the other parts of a duck or goose. Feathers are rigid and provide support for items like feather pillows, feather pillow forms, feather beds and more.

Both Down & Feathers are processed the same way and are usually equal in their hypoallergenic standards based on what manufacturer you are buying from. Higher amounts of feathers are useful for items that need to be firmer and durable.

The biggest difference between down and feathers is in their usage. Down and feathers can both be machine washed and dried and can provide years of comfort for the home user. Down usually can be washed and dried faster than feathers due to the moisture trapping of the quills on feathers.

Many 3, 4 and 5 star hotels like to use a 50/50 pillow on their beds (This is a pillow comprised of half down and half feathers). Hotels will also use a down comforter on the bed and in the best and most luxurious properties a feather bed on top of the mattress.

While down provides soft luxurious comfort, feathers can provide support. Both down and feathers can last several years thus providing comfort for night after night. Down and feather bedding are equal in their ability to be allergy friendly due to the higher thread count cotton fabric typically used. In fact some British research has shown that down and feather bedding actually saw an improvement in home related allergies for their users.

Any product labeled Down in the United States must contain by law a minimum of 75% down clusters in the filled bedding item. The other 25% consist of more down, small feathers and/or fiber (which is the broken off pieces of down clusters). There are only several down bedding manufacturers in the United States and many of the biggest ship their filling to other users of down including outerwear, sleeping bag makers and fine furniture companies.

Sometimes consumers have a negative perception of feather bedding due to the nature of feather pillows and feather beds having poking feathers. In truth even the best feather bedding item can poke once in a while due to the nature of the pointy feather quills. Therefore for items like feather pillows and feather beds it is recommended to use quilted protectors to add comfort. It is also important to consider buying a more luxurious blend of feather filling such as a 10/90 versus the more common 5/95 feather/down blends.

How Moshi Pillows Have Managed to be Part of Thousands of Households

How Moshi Pillows Have Managed to be Part of Thousands of Households

Created in Japan for the first time, Moshi pillows are now sold all over the world, being part of thousands of households. As they come in a great variety of shapes and colors, Moshi pillows satisfy the taste of the most hard-to-please customers; people are usually charmed by the mushy feeling they get when holding the pillows. This effect is triggered by the use of micro-size beads in the interior filling of the Moshi pillows; these beads actually adjust when the slightest kind of pressure is applied to them, hence the squishy feeling we were talking about.

When they were first launched on the market, Moshi pillows came in several shapes and colors only, whereas now you can actually match them to any model of furniture and even to curtains. The most common decorative shapes are triangular, oval, square and round but there are some Moshi pillows that are designed in the most curious of ways. Giant red lips, diamonds, cartoon characters, hearts, boxing gloves and so on are but a few of the varied designs used for Moshi pillows. Like in many other domains, variety has no limits. Have a look over some catalogs or take a tour of a shop and you’ll see how many choices you’ve got.

Kids and adolescents are simply crazy about Moshi pillows, not only can they get to decorate their private space with great cartoon characters, but they can also relate to their hobbies in the most artistically pleasant way. Here, we particularly refer to the Moshi pillows shaped like basketballs, soccer balls or boxing gloves. The compact size of such decorative items makes them ideal for traveling too; the kids are the happiest when they can actually take a “virtual” companion with them. Having the Moshi pillows in the car would be like Batman traveling with them: such items keep the children occupied and happy during a trip.

Moshi pillows can be used everywhere in the house regardless of the functionality of each room: from kitchen to bedroom, they make great decorative items. Studies showed that holding a Moshi pillow allows the body to relax eliminating negative energies such as stress; this effect is the result of the soft muscle massage that is triggered by the bead arrangement and rearrangement. All in all, Moshi pillows are both beautiful and functional, occupying a top place in the popularity charts when it comes to defining favorite decorative items.

Have Travel Pillow-Will Travel

Have Travel Pillow-Will Travel

There are just certain things which we used to take for granted that are now nowhere to be found. In the good old days, you would walk onto a plane and each seat had a travel pillow and blanket well organized and ready for our comfort. I relish the days when the airlines used to have a big ole’ stack of newspapers and magazines they would pass out to passengers just before takeoff. That was nice. You could cover up, rest your poor weary head and kick back with a good piece of reading material.

Gone are the days of baked on board cookies and actual meals. Yes, sadly we are in a “fend-for-yourself” world and having your own travel pillow just makes sense. Obviously we cherish our comforts. The road is rough out there but we can all survive as long as we have our own plushy, squishy travel pillow with us.

We used to coddle our children and allow them to bring their little pillow with them for added security and comfort. But now, we ALL have a travel pillow and it is no longer just for the kids but for everyone. We’re all just kids deep down inside wanting our “lovey”, as some nannies call it. It makes us feel nicer. After you’ve been practically stripped down by federal agents, walked through security belt less and shoeless and had to stand in line and wait to be subjected to all this humiliating scrutiny, it’s nice to be able to snuggle down in your middle seat of a full aircraft with your own clean, silky travel pillow. As Martha would say, “it’s a good thing.”

Sitting for long periods of time will cause swelling and joint pain and an increased risk of blood clots. Numerous studies have been done on Deep Vein Thrombosis, known as “Economy Class Syndrome”, problems occurring on long flights. There is a travel seat pillow out now that actually runs on batteries providing alternating support to your derriere. On a very long flight or drive this could actually be a life-saver if you are prone to stiffness when sitting for extended periods of time.

There are nice sets available on the market with the matching travel pillow, blanket and eye shades. This is a nice trio to keep on hand. Traveling is almost an extreme sport and having a few comforting niceties at hand will make it a little easier on both you and your aching muscles. Face it, coach seats are getting smaller and as a society we are getting bigger. Your travel pillow may just take the edge off, allowing you to fall into slumber land and forget all the woes that go with air and road travel.

Here at travelpillowzone.com will help you to equalize tension and pressure. So, if you need to have the best sleep and relaxation while traveling we have different kinds of traveling pillows that meet your needs.

Why Bed Rest Pillows Can Make Your Bed Reading Even Better

Ever heard of a pillow with armrests? Sounds far fetched? As weird as it sounds, these pillows are called bed rest pillows. If you are uncomfortable when you are leaning on your bed to read for hours, you need bed rest pillows. They are basically pillows with arms for you to have the comfort of an armchair.

These pillows are also called husband pillows because they are large and somewhat hard to lean on. It prevents you from having back pain even after hours of reading.

These pillows are not really small but they are still lightweight enough to be carried from one place to another. Place it in your driver seat and you will still have comfort after hours of driving. If you are worried about cleaning it, a bed rest pillow usually comes with a removable cover. You can just take it off, throw it in the washing machine and let the machine do all the grunt work.

Great Pillows For Back Support

Great Pillows For Back Support

Many people all over the world suffer from back pain, primarily because they do not receive the proper back support. The link between proper back support and back pain may be well documented, but many people do not consider that it may be their pillow what is causing their back problems. Poor posture, exhaustion and fatigue are usually some common causes of back pain, but many simply never realize that their pillow might be the one to blame. Many pillows today do not even come close to offering the proper neck and back support that the body needs to stay in proper alignment. Using the wrong pillow can give you a sore neck, sore back, can bring your body out of alignment, and can ruin your posture.

However, there are a number of specially designed pillows on the market, which can offer you the proper spine support, and work to decrease your back pain. The average pillow is not usually designed with the health of your back in mind. Most pillows are made of foam, or fiber, or a combination of cotton or feathers. Most pillows are designed specifically for comfort, but are usually not designed for optimal spine, or back health. This is why in recent years we have seen a number of new specially designed pillows become available, that are specifically designed for the optimum health of your back and spine.

One of these pillows is known as a lumbar pillow. A lumbar pillow is a U-shaped or rectangular pillow, designed for treating back and spine health. This is a back pillow used to fill as a cushion created between your spine and the chair. People can use it at work, while driving, even on an airplane, to give you that extra posture and back support it so desperately needs. This can be used in conjunction with a specialty neck support pillow, to provide optimum back relief.

Another popular pillow designed for back support is the donut pillow. The donut pillow serves as a relief to people who have tailbone problems, and other back concerns. The donut pillow’s shape is as it sounds, being a circular pillow with a whole in the middle. The central hole absorbs the gravitational force from your neck to the pillow, allowing relief for the tailbone, not to mention better alignment of the spine. The donut pillow offers relief from pain, better alignment and overall better back health.

When you’re searching for your next pillow and you want to pick one based on comfort and appeal, you may want to think again. Your pillow can have profound effects on your posture, back health, alignment of your body and neck. Before buying your next pillow make sure you take a second look, and choose a pillow that’s not only comfortable but good for your spine and back as well.

Maternity pillows make great sleep aids during pregnancy

Maternity pillows make great sleep aids during pregnancy

Pregnant mothers often quickly find out that getting a good night’s rest is easier said than done.  Finding a comfortable position to sleep becomes more difficult as the baby grows and develops during pregnancy, causing many changes in the expectant mother’s body.

A maternity pillow is a specially designed pillow designed to help expecting mothers sleep.   And while they may come in different shapes and sizes, generally speaking using a maternity pillow to support your back and belly during advanced stages of your pregnancy can give you the much needed good night’s sleep.  This is especially true during the second and third trimester of your pregnancy.

How maternity pillows work

Pregnancy research indicates that lying on your left side is the ideal position for sleeping since it prevents the weight of the baby from obstructing the blood flow through the vena cava and aorta, both of which lie slightly to the right of your spine.  Using a nursing pillow as a support while lying on your left side will have you and your baby resting more easily.

A nursing pillow can help you relax in many ways including:

Tuck it between your bent knees to support your lower back and make side sleeping more comfortable. Place it behind your back for you to lean on, as you sleep on your side and get a good night’s sleep. Put it under your belly while you lie on your side to reduce the feeling of heaviness. Gently elevate your legs by placing the pillow under them to take the pressure off your back and tummy when you are tired of sleeping on your side. Use it to prop yourself up to a semi-recline when you are lying on your back.

Different Types of material

Maternity pillows come in many shapes and sizes as well as different types of materials and stuffing.  These include traditional pillow materials such as cotton, polyester fibers and even memory foams.  It is a good idea to carefully review the materials in a prospective maternity pillow to ensure there is no allergen causing material present.

Find a maternity pillow that can double as a nursing pillow

In today’s cost conscious world buying a pillow strictly for use during pregnancy may not be an option especially given the expenses associated with a new baby.  In this case we recommend considering a pillow that may serve as both a maternity and nursing pillow.  Several brands of dual purpose pillows are available on the market today and offer great value as they can be used for a longer period of time.

Andre’ Savoie writes for Luna Lullaby, maker of the Bosom Baby Nursing Pillows which also double as pregnancy pillows. Visit our website to shop styles and colors or to learn more about maternity pillows.

Patio Chair Cushions

Patio Chair Cushions

Your patio is a place of relaxation. It’s a place of fun, family, and social gatherings. For some, it may even operate as an outdoor office. This means that sun, spills, stains, and everyday life cannot take a toll on your cushions. It isn’t too much to ask. You do deserve patio chair cushions that can stand up to the harsh elements of weather. You do deserve a patio chair cushion that withstands all that children, pets, and the occasionally clumsy guest can put it through. You deserve a cushion that looks and feels great.

Here are three tips to help you find the perfect cushion to meet your needs.

Tip #1 Look for patio cushions that have durable fabrics and sturdy manufacturing. Durable patio chair cushions don’t have to be ugly. There is absolutely no reason why a cushion can’t be beautiful and last a long time.

Here’s what to look for:

-Durable fabrics are key. No, not plastic. Plastic splits and pinches. Look for cotton canvas. Why? It’s soft, durable, and it can be washed. Additionally, cotton comes in just about every color or pattern under the sun. The sky is the limit.

-Reinforced stitching or piping. What usually gives first on a cushion – the seam. Look for cushions that have reinforced stitching or better yet, reinforced piping to protect the seams.

-Reinforced zippers. To make your cushions look and feel their best, you’re going to wash your cushions occasionally. A zipper on the back makes this process significantly easier. All you have to do is unzip, remove the center, and drop them in the wash. However, zippers like seams if manufactured shoddily will be the first thing to give. Reinforced zippers last longer.

Tip #2 Lasting cushion comfort and durability means quality foam centers. Patio chair cushions can have a variety of fillers. You’ll find them with lose filler or more often with a foam core. For optimal durability and comfort go with the foam core, more specifically a high density foam core. The difference is that the high density foam core is not only comfortable and supportive; its real strength is that it keeps its shape for years.

How thick your cushions are is up to you. I prefer 2 inches of high density foam because it is thick enough to keep my legs from falling asleep but not so thick that I feel like I’m sitting on a phone book.

Tip #3 Look for a patio chair cushion that stays put. Who wants a cushion that slides off onto the ground or a cushion that only covers half of your chair – that’s certainly not comfortable nor a good way to make your cushion last. This is accomplished in two ways. First, make sure that your cushions have the ability to be secured to your chair in the right places. This not only ensures that the wind doesn’t zip them into the neighbor’s yard but it means that when you sit down to relax, your cushion is where it is supposed to be. Unfortunately, tie downs can rip off. Look for ties that are durable with reinforced stitching.

In addition to being able to secure your cushions to your chairs, look for cushions that are designed for your type of furniture. This means that if you have an Adirondack chair, look for cushions designed for the unique angles of an Adirondack. If you have a chaise that you’re fitting a cushion to, then you’ll want a patio chair cushion that fits all three segments of your chair: the back, seat, and legs. For an optimal fit, look for a cushion that fits your chairs like well placed puzzle pieces – notches and all. A cushion designed for your specific chair lasts longer.

There’s nothing worse than spending a fortune on a patio chair cushion only to have it fall apart before the end of the summer. You now have the tools you need to find gorgeous patio chair cushions that not only meet your design needs, the meet your comfort needs and best of all, they last a good long time.
